INCUBATION
Turning raw ideas into industry dominating companies
Metacept is led by David Smith, whose group at Duke University has been at the forefront of most major metamaterial breakthroughs, and has spun out metamaterials-based startups at a 100% survival rate, including several unicorns.
Our team members have developed category-defining metamaterial solutions for prestigious organizations such as NASA, DARPA, Intellectual Ventures, Lumotive, or Kymeta.
In collaboration with MetaVC Partners, a Gates-backed VC, we leverage our engineering and startup experience, and exclusive access to the world's largest metamaterials patent portfolio to launch groundbreaking companies.
The fastest AI chip
Light-based computers that are 100 times faster and more energy-efficient than current state-of-the-art chips.

Through-the-Wall Imaging
A handheld device that penetrates walls to create 3D models, detecting damage and expediting renovation.

Prof. David R. Smith, CEO
In 2004 David started the David R. Smith Research Group at Duke University. Since then the group has been responsible for nearly every major breakthrough worldwide in metamaterial science.
Together with the Invention Science fund, the research group has spun out many industry changing unicorn startups based on metamaterial science.

Metacept Inc. was founded in 2018 by David, the worlds leading scientists, product engineers, and proven entrepreneurs to serve as metamaterials commercialisation hub

Metacept partners with MetaVC, a metamaterials focused fund backed by Bill Gates
Metacept spins out its first startup, Neurophos, in 2019. Neurophos makes neuromorphic AI chips based on optical metasurfaces for use in datacenters, and is already shattering world records in computational energy efficiency.
